Silicone Intermediate Modifying organic paint binders with silicone will increase resistance to environmental degradation and UV light, as well as to heat. As a result, the paint films are more resistant to chalking and retain their gloss and color much better than do straight organic binders, especially in warm and sunny regions. Modification is preferably effected by a condensation process, which yields homogeneous coating raw material that are superior to materials made by simple cold blending. Binders produced by condensing silicone intermediates with the widely used air-drying alkyd resins not only feature much improved weathering resistance but can also be applied just as easily. With medium-oil to long-oil alkyd resins, good results are obtained at 30 wt % silicone content. |
