Abiol
1,1-Methylene-bis[3-(3-Hydroxymethyl-2,4-Dioxo)5-Imidazolidinyl]Urea
Abiol is a preservative which is stable and effective over the pH range used for cosmetic products.
It maintains its antimicrobial activity for a long time after incorporation into the product to be preserved.
Abiol is compatible with the ingredients employed in the cosmetic field such as proteins, surfactants, perfumes, and dyes.
If Abiol is used alone, it is more effective against gram-negative bacteria than other cosmetic
preservatives and has strong activity against the deactivating effects of certain emulsifiers and proteins.
Due to its good water solubility, Abiol concentrates in the water phase where bacteria grow.
It is effective against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as against some yeasts and fungi(see table 1).
The combination of Abiol with Parabens takes advantage of the synergistic action that exists between Abiol and Parabens to provide a broad spectrum preservative system.
The basic system which has been successful in several cosmetic products is: 0.3% ABIOL/0.2% Methyl Paraben/0.1% Propyl Paraben.
This system is used in a wide variety of products such as lotions, creams, hair conditioners, shampoos, deodorants, and make-up powdered products.
