Liver fluke disease occurs in either of two forms: acute or chronic. Acute liver fluke disease results from sudden injury to the liver caused by the passage of large numbers of immature flukes from the gut to the liver. Symptoms of severe infections include: distended, painful abdomen, anemia and sudden death. In less severe cases poor production and growth, coupled with reduced appetite and abdominal pain are apparent. Chronic liver fluke disease is more common than the acute form. Affected animals may exhibit anemia, unthriftiness, and reduced production or bottle jaw. Diagnosis of liver fluke disease varies. Fluke eggs can be identified in the feces during a chronic infection: however, eggs are not present in the feces during an acute infection. Postmortem inspection of the liver reveals characteristic damage. The liver will be enlarged and bloody while adult flukes will be readily seen in the bile ducts and immature stages may be squeezed or teased from the cut surface.
