SolarCat
It is now well understood by consumers that skin needs to be protected from sunlight and in particular from UV light.
What is less well understood is that UV light can be divided into UVA light(320-400 nm) and UVB light(280-320 nm).
UVA waves are longer and can penetrate deeper into skin.
An excess of UVA light does long term damage causing elastosis(or wrinkling), lines, dry skin and pigment disorders.
UVB waves are shorter but just as damaging.
Although UVB cannot penetrate as deeply as UVA these shorter wavelengths carry more damaging energy and so in excess are equally undesirable.
They mainly affect the upper layers of the skin where they stimulate the epidermis to produce melanin.
In excess both UVA and UVB cause damage that can result in skin cancer.
The importance of protecting skin from both UVB and UVA light has only recently been appreciated.
So recently in fact, that the butyl methoxydibenzolmethane in SolarCat is the first and only FDA approved UVA protecting chemical sunscreen.
The ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate in SolarCat, on the other hand is a tried and trusted UVB protecting chemical sunscreen.
Butyl methoxydibenzolmethane alone is difficult to formulate with and so Collaborative Laboratories has combined it with ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate using a specialized encapsulation process to produce the easy-to-use SolarCat.
SolarCat is an excellent ingredient for sun protecting cosmetics.
It is water dispersible and gives protection against damage by both UVB and UVA sunlight.
SolarCat furnishes the finished product with excellent aesthetic properties.
The specialized encapsulation process in SolarCat results in a system that is charged and protects the ingredients(increasing their stability).
Delivering butyl methoxydibenzolmethane and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate in a cationic charged system enhances substantivity and ensures that the actives only go to the surface of the skin where they are most effective.
The cationic charge holds the ingredients to the skin longer, prolonging protection and reducing irritation.
High SPF can be achieved formulating with SolarCat.
For example, a gel containing 25% SolarCat(formulated at Collaborative Laboratories) had and SPF value greater than 19.
SolarCat also contains balm mint extract, a natural antioxidant, which will scavenge free radicals generated in the skin through the action of sunlight.
This makes SolarCat a complete sun treatment ingredient.
