DMEA
DMEA catalyst (dimethylethanolamine) is a clear, colorless liquid with an ammonia-like odor. It contains both a tertiary amine group and a hedroxyl group, and therefore undergoes reactions typical of both amines and alcohols.
DMEA catalyst strongly catalyzes the water-isocyanate reaction in the production of polyurethane foam. The hydroxyl group of this catalyst can react with isocyanate, thereby chemically bonding the DMEA catalyst molecule to the urethane polymer. As a result, residual amine odor in the finished foam product is minimized. However, poor surface cure and green strength may result. When this is a concern, DMEA catalyst should be replaced with a stronger amine catalyst such as TEDA L-33 or TEDA crystal catalysts.
