BYK-Catalyst 451 |
Solution of an amine salt of para-Toluene Sulfonic Acid (p-TSA) |
Blocked acid catalyst for solvent-based and aqueous coating systems. The additive accelerates the cross-linking of amino resins with resins containing hydroxyl groups. Especially low reactive melamine formaldehyde resins of HMMM type need an accelerator to lower curing temperature or to reduce baking time. The additive permits the production of stable one-pack systems and provides consistent durability, excellent package stability and superb film properties. It has no negative influence on conductivity or wrinkling and does not adversely affect gloss and haze. In comparison with pure p-toluenesulfonic acid, the additive shows considerably lower viscosity increase on storage which can extend shelf life 1.5-3 times. It allows a 10 to 20'C (15-35'F) lower baking temperature compared to other blocked p-TSA catalysts (such as those with morpholine or aminomethylpropanol). BYK-Catalyst 451 (along with BYK-Catalyst-450) is the fastest curing catalyst in the product line, providing maximum hardness at the lowest baking temperature, depending on the system, starting from 80-90'C (175-195'F). BYK-Catalyst 451 has the same acid-blocking mechanism as BYK-Catalyst 450 but is supplied in a different solvent blend. The additive is not available outside the North American market. |
