Allyl alcohol is a clear, colorless, high boiling liquid. It has a sharp, mustard-like odor that is detectable at 0.8 parts per million of air (PPM). Allyl alcohol is a highly toxic chemical, but, when used with proper safeguards, it serves as a useful starting material for a variety of specialty monomers and polymers. Lyondell Chemical, which is the sole United States producer, manufactures allyl alcohol by isomerization of propylene oxide. |
