Since polyolefins are intrinsicaly non-conductive, they tend to accumulate static charges during processing and storage and in use.
Antistatic agents are incorporated in plastics to form a conductive layer at the external resin air-interface by reaction with absorbed water.
Partial fatty esters of glycerine like ESTOL 1468 (glycerol monostearate) and PRIOLUBE 1407 (glycerol mono-oleate) are frequently used as antistatic agents for polyethylene (both) and polypropylene (PRIOLUBE 1407).
The antistatic agents are dosed before moulding or extrusion.
The required concentration varies according to the end use and the film thickness of the final product.
Current dosage levels for LDPE and HDPE are up to 0.15 and 0.3% respectively. A concentration for PP between 0.3 and 0.5% is not uncommon.
