Plasticizers are added to the PVC resin to proroote softness and flexibility in the finished article. Plastizers include esters of phthalic, adipic phosphoric and citric acid. Phthalate plasticizers are the most widely used type of plasticizer. They have little effect on the ultimate stability of PVC compounds. It has been suggested that they are prone to oxidative breakdown at high temperatures. This can be readily controlled by the addition of minor quantities of suitable anti-oxidants. These are usually already present in the plasticizer Adipate plasticizers confer excellent low temperature flexibility, and are also permitted in flexible food contact applications Phosphate plasticizers are added to decrease the flammability of the end product. |
