An air-ground mica produced specifically for joint compound applications. It is especially desired where whiteness is important in the joint compound. Mica 5290 has also been used successfully in other products like caulking, dusting lubricants, specialty paints, and textures for walls and ceilings. SPARTAN coarse scrap mica is a by-product of spodumene mining at FMC Lithium Division, its parent company. It is separated and purified by froth flotation techniques to insure consistent color and chemistry. white muscovite mica with a complex chemical structure. It is commonly referred to as a hydrated potassium aluminum silicate with inclusions of sodium, iron, magnesium, calcium and lithium. The crystalline structure of muscovite is characterized by very thin, transparent, elastic and strong flakes. SPARTAN fluid energy grinding mills take advantage of this mica structure by producing the maximum degree of delamination while reducing the size of the flake to a finely ground product. The ground product is then air classified and screened. |
