trigonal 14 is a liquid formulation of benzoinethers which is recommended as UV initiator for the photopolymerization of unsaturated polyester resins, acrylates and methacrylates. Trigonal 14 has especially been developed for the UV curing of UP resinbased coatings and laminates. Trigonal 14 should for the cure of laminates be used in combination with an amine accelerator. Optimal results can be obtained with Trigonal 14 in combination with Accelerator UV-1. For the UV curing an UV light source should be used of which the emission spectrum is optimal for the application area viz. 320 - 360 nm for the cure of coatings and 360 - 42 nm for the cure of laminates. Apart from the emission spectrum a distinction can also be made between low pressure lamps of approx. 40-100 Watt and high pressure lamps of approx. 400-4000 Watt. Teh use of high pressure lamps result in a faster cure. The cure speed of UV sensitized UP resins is apart from the choice of the UV lamp also strongly influenced by the distance of the UV lamp to the moulding. It is obvious that UV curing is only possible with transparent resin systems. Filled resin systems can not or only to a very limited thickness be cured by uV light. |
