Akrosorb 19480 is a 75% active dispersion of SR 206 on calcium silicate (crystalline quartz-free). SR 206 is Ethylene Glycol Dimethacrylate, a difunctional peroxide co-agent. Because SR 206 is a liquid normally used in smaller quantities, this non-dusting, free-flowing powder aids weigh-up and batch addition. Akrosorb 19480 is an efficient peroxide coagent for curing of most elastomeric systems. As little as 2 phr of active material will raise the modulus and hardness as well as improve compression set resistance (essentially increasing cross-link density). Alternately, less peroxide needs to be used to reach an equivalent state-of-cure of a formula using peroxide alone. Higher levels of 19480 will continue to raise hardness and modulus while at the same time plasticizing the rubber. High hardness compounds (70 Shore D) can be made that have excellent processibility and better elastomeric properties (compression set resistance) than filler or plastic reinforced rubber. It is advisable to use a scorch-retarded coagent (such as SR 500 or 516) when using high levels of acrylate coagents. In contrast to other coagent types, the acrylic resin monomer is useful in all peroxide curable rubbers. |
