Aluminum silicates or clays are the single most used non-black fillers in elastomeric systems. They function as semi-reinforcers or extenders in rubber compounds at an economical price. These light cream powders are refined by an air separation process to remove impurities like quartz and mica and to produce a specific particle size. Aluminum silicates or clays are commonly referred to as kaolin clays. Clays are used as low cost non-black reinforcing, stiffening or extending fillers in rubber. Hard clays give abrasion resistance. HC-100 and HC-75 are standard and lower cost grades of hard clay. Soft clay allows higher pigment loading where abrasion is not important. |
