GBL is used in a variety of applications including detergents, air fresheners, household cleaners, and paint removers. Its combination of high flash point, low volatility and broad solvency make GBL an excellent replacement for regulated solvents. GBL is used as a carrier solvent and as a chemical intermediate for herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. GBL is a solvent for many polymers. Polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylcarbazole, polystyrene, poly-amides and cellulose acetate are just a few polymers easily solubilized by GBL. GBL is very effective as a selective solvent in the petroleum industry. Uses as acetylene clean-up, aromatic/paraffin, olefin/paraffin and naphthene separations solvents are typical. Inorganic compounds and azeotropic mixtures are easily separated by the use of GBL. Selective extraction of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide from natural or process gas streams is also a common use. GBL is also an excellent solvent for many chemical processes either alone or in combination with other solvents. |
